My first visit to my oncologist was on 25 September 2017. It was a Monday whereby I was still trying to adjust to all the changes and frenzy from the visits to the doctors and the procedure done on the previous Friday.
My oncologist is Dr Wong Seng Weng from The Cancer Centre. My aunt was the one who recommended me to go to him as he is quite well known. I remembered i was very nervous when I reached the clinic, as my previous visit to the oncologist in Hospital H was not a pleasant experience, I really did not know how this visit would turn out to be.
I remembered when Dr Wong walked out and he called out my name, I was thinking to myself, ” Okay, he looked nice. Hopefully the experience will be better than Hospital H.” Dr Wong was holding on to the door for us to his office and then we walked in, got seated down and he was LOOKING AT ME NOT THE PC SCREEN (I am thinking to myself, “He treats me as a human not just a piece of meat”) as he explained to me the option that I have and how the treatments will be carried out.
The treatments that Dr Wong recommended for me was to start with the 1st round of chemotherapy, 12 weekly sessions of the milder treatments then proceed with the harsher chemotherapy that will be done once every 3 weeks. As he explained the processes to me and the side effects that I may experience, I felt more at ease and see more hope in recovery rather than the doom and gloom feeling that hospital H gave me.
I tell myself after the consultation that I am in good hands. I don’t feel like I have to fight airtime with the pc screen, you know what I mean.
