On May 22, 2023, I arrived at my oncologist’s office, feeling a mix of nerves and hope. I had undergone scans and blood tests on May 19, and today I anticipated the news that I had achieved remission.
As I entered the oncologist’s room, she began with a positive note about my scans and blood tests, but then delivered a shocking twist: “Your brain MRI shows that your blood vessels are thinning, and there appears to be something in them. You need to see a neurologist immediately.” Although I was in remission from breast cancer, I was now facing a high likelihood of a stroke.
I was stunned. At just 45, how could my blood vessels be thinning? What was this mysterious finding in my brain? A whirlwind of questions filled my mind, yet I found myself speechless.
With a heavy heart, I took the referral letter and rushed to see the neurologist, grappling with fear and frustration. “It can’t be happening again!” I thought.
The AI medications I had been taking for my hormonal therapy as part of my cancer treatment can sometimes lead to serious issues, including blood clots, which may result in heart attacks or strokes. It’s crucial to be aware of warning signs such as sudden shortness of breath, chest or jaw pain, confusion, coughing up blood, sudden dizziness or fainting, and any unusual tingling or weakness in the limbs. Immediate medical help is essential if any of these symptoms arise. [Learn more about the medication and its side effects here.](https://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-17966/aromasin-oral/details#:~:text=This%20medication%20(and%20cancer)%20may,as%20heart%20attack%20or%20stroke). In addition to the serious risks, there are also less common side effects associated with my medication, Aromasin. While doctors may not always highlight these issues, I personally experienced several, including fatigue, mood swings, nausea, knee pain, and excessive sweating throughout my five years on Aromasin. Other potential side effects include:
– Carpal tunnel syndrome
– Hair thinning
– Heart problems
– Increased blood pressure
– Increased cholesterol
– Rarely, cancer of the uterus and stroke
– Hot flashes
– Bone pain
– Joint pain
– Weakness
As I navigate this new chapter, I remain hopeful but vigilant. The journey through cancer treatment is unpredictable, and I’m learning to face each challenge with courage and resilience.
